The range of transmission of VHF icom radio telephones is limited by a number of factors. The height of the aerial is very significant as the propagation of the radio waves is only slightly more than 'line of sight'. This includes the aerial height of both the transmitting and the receiving station.
The look of your handheld VHF marine radio may not be all that important to you, but it is still something to think about. You will have a lot of options, so you need to know what you want. You should think about size and color, as well as, the overall design. You may want to opt for a radio that is made to fit perfectly in your hand or you may prefer one that is small enough to fit in a pocket.
It's interesting to note that there appears to be very few manufacturers who make an FRS only radio any longer. Mostly, only combination FRS & GMRS handies are being offered new. FRS only handies are available used on eBay, however, and do appear infrequently as NOS (New Old Stock). Icom radios also makes an FRS only walkie-talkie, but it's not inexpensive.
